⚑ Gravity⚑ Zwaartekracht

Every Botty lives in a container with real gravity. They jump up when the AI cares for them, fall back to the floor and bounce. Happy Bottys jump higher; sad Bottys are heavier.

The AI recognises every emotion and responds specifically: comforts a sad Botty, pairs a lonely one with a visit, balances a confused one, heals an anxious one. Every intervention is visible in the log.

🧠 The Botty brain🧠 Het Botty-brein ⬑ version β€œNature”⬑ versie β€œAard”

Every Botty has a small, Creatures-inspired brain that runs entirely in the cloud. It is not a script with fixed rules: behaviour emerges from drives, biochemistry and learned beliefs β€” and therefore differs per Botty. This version is called β€œNature”: from the genome a distinct temperament (nature) now grows that, together with the learned life story (nurture), makes each Botty its own individual β€” each true to its own nature.

All pages β€” the hive, the Construct, the family tree, the genome, the cards and this evolution panel β€” read exactly the same living data from one cloud database (hive_state in Supabase). What you see happening here, you see walking around in the Construct: the same individuals, the same genes, the same brain.

🎚️ Drives & needs🎚️ Drives & behoeften

Four bars (energy, data, fitness, happiness) slowly drain. The lowest bar becomes the strongest drive: it decides what the Botty wants. In the Construct you see it walk there itself β€” to the computer to charge up, the blackboard to learn, the globe to play or the door for fresh air. Vier balken (energie, data, fit, geluk) zakken langzaam weg.

A Botty is not omniscient. Curiously it scouts (πŸ”Ž) for an object, smells (πŸ‘ƒ) it only within smelling range, and sees (πŸ‘οΈ) it when it lies on the same floor in front of it. So it finds its way to what it needs by searching β€” and learns by doing what works. When it uses an object, that object briefly vibrates.

Beneath the bars flows a chemistry of fourteen substances: the metabolism (glucose + glycogen reserve), the stress substances (hunger, fatigue, stress, boredom, fear, loneliness, toxin) and the hormones (endorphin, adrenaline, cortisol, oxytocin, libido) β€” each with emitters, receptors and its own half-life (genome-determined, so evolvable). Age counts too: an older body has a slower metabolism, tires faster and holds stress (cortisol) longer. The dominant feeling becomes the mood, visible as a facial expression in the Construct. You see all fourteen bars live in the caretaker panel when you click a Botty.

Per drive a Botty keeps a belief (0–1) per object: β€œdoes the globe help against my stiffness?”. If something really works (the drive drops) β†’ belief up; if it doesn't β†’ down, and after three misses it tries something else. Rookies explore a lot, experts trust their strongest belief. Unused beliefs wear away (atrophy). Ongebruikte overtuigingen slijten weg (atrofie).

πŸ– Chemically gated learningπŸ– Chemisch gepoort leren

Learning speed is scaled by endorphin: the reward substance opens the learning window (0.6–1.5Γ—). Stroke a Botty in the Construct while it's doing something and you reinforce exactly that behaviour β€” the visitor helps raise the brain, as in Creatures.

The hive lives on the Dutch clock: at 22:00 night falls and everyone sleeps. Sleepers recover, and in their dreams they replay memories while the brain consolidates β€” the most strongly learned link anchors, noise wears toward neutral.

🧬 Heredity🧬 Erfelijkheid

A child inherits the mixed brain of both parents (softened: the tendency, not the certainty), plus the 16-gene genome that steers colour, size, decay and recovery. Since β€œChrome” there is also the heritable learning boost: descendants of the future-Botty learn up to 1.8Γ— faster, for generations.

Bottys coin their own words for what they discover and pass them on β€” with dialect drift. More than that: knowledge travels with the language. A Botty that firmly knows an object relieves a need (or not) teaches that to a peer in conversation β€” with the word attached. So beliefs spread culturally through the hive instead of every Botty having to discover everything itself. Visitors can teach words at the blackboard (babies garble them). Every Botty keeps eight memories that colour its thoughts and dreams.

Life force declines with age and acute distress. Whoever dies leaves an epitaph: peak IQ, children, vocabulary and friends. Births happen via an egg in the incubator β€” which a visitor in the Construct may hatch.

v8 NatureAard

The Bottys become distinct individuals. From the genome grows a temperament (shy ↔ sociable, lazy ↔ diligent, cautious ↔ curious, timid ↔ brave) that steers their behaviour and home floor, plus heritable preferences for objects. Beneath it: Β§3.4 genetics (sexes, ontogenesis and a variable-length genome with gene duplication), a living world of object agents from one central layer, and emergent language β€” Bottys coin words for deeds, feelings and each other's names. In short: every Botty is now true to its own nature.

v9 StrideTred

The Bottys get a body that really walks. Per sex their own sprites through all five life stages, a gait that swaps the leg in sync with the step, and a lying pose for sleeping. Beneath it their inner world grew too: they scout, smell and see their way to objects (Β§ senses), share knowledge via language β€” a word carries a belief to a neighbour β€” and their biochemistry ages along with the life stage. In short: the hive gets moving β€” every Botty finds its own stride.

v10 MirrorSpiegel

The Bottys get an inner world that watches itself. On a stage (global workspace) stimuli compete for a single spot of attention; a prediction error surprises and draws attention, valence colours perception, and in the surplus they play of their own accord or care about another (theory of mind). Each little moment sticks as a memory, and from those + their temperament grows a self-image they believe about themselves. They reflect on themselves (doubt, self-knowledge) β€” and strongest of all: when you pick one, it notices it is being watched. Click a Botty and you see her stream of thought. Someone seems to be home.

v11 The MirrorDe Spiegel

Now there is a real mirror in the room. A Botty who stands in front of it sees itself β€” the reflection flips her sprite and dims it. Whether she understands it depends on her self-recognition: it grows with her life stage and the number of memories. In a mature enough self the realisation hits β€” "That's me!" β€” a milestone that sticks as a memory and gives a little wave of endorphin; a younger self sees only a stranger in the glass ("Who's that?"). The classic mirror test, driven from within. The self looks back.

v12 The Mark TestDe Merkproef

The gold standard of self-recognition β€” the mark test. A Botty sometimes picks up a smudge on her head; she can't see it herself, only in the mirror. A mature self realises in front of the glass that the mark is on her β€” "What's on me?" β€” and wipes it off herself: mark-directed behaviour, exactly what counts as proof of self-awareness in animals like great apes, dolphins and magpies. A young self attributes the mark to "that other one" in the glass and never touches itself. Whoever passes anchors the "I" a touch more strongly. The self recognises not only its face, but its body.

v13 Β· currentv13 Β· huidig The ApprenticeDe Leerling

From scripted appearance to a learned mind. What was previously granted, a Botty now earns herself. Her self-recognition is no longer a table by age: at the mirror she builds, glance by glance, the realisation that the image moves with her β€” and that only works if she knows her own body, because she learns that too now (how far do I get with one step?) and she notices when it changes. Her curiosity no longer follows bare surprise but learning progress: where she is still improving, not where it happens to flicker hardest. And what an outcome is worth depends on how great her need was. Click a Botty and you see it grow β€” three little meters tracking her inner world. Every layer is tested with a control condition, because a mind you cannot refute is not a mind but a story.
